ONE LAST LOVE LETTER

Director Yuya Ishii in Attendance

In 2024, Nazuna, who runs a small diner, writes a letter to the young man she once loved from afar. Twenty-four years earlier, at 17, she secretly admired Shinsuke, a high school student she saw each day on the train. While attending school, Shinsuke also pursued his dream of becoming a professional boxer. They begin to form an unspoken connection until, on March 8, 2000, Shinsuke is killed in the tragic Naka-Meguro train disaster.

When Nazuna’s letter reaches Shinsuke’s family, his father Ryuji discovers tender traces of the son he lost: glimpses of his youth, longing, and inner life he had never known. As Ryuji begins writing back, an intimate exchange of memory and grief unfolds.

A moving reflection on loss, remembrance, and the invisible bonds that endure, the film turns private sorrow into a deeply human story of love and grace. Inspired by a miraculous true story.

Special Guest: Yuya Ishii, Director

Born in Saitama Prefecture in 1983, Yuya Ishii studied at Osaka University of Arts and quickly emerged as one of Japan’s most distinctive contemporary filmmakers. His graduation film, BARE-ASSED JAPAN (2005), won the Grand Prize at the Pia Film Festival, and in 2008 he became the first recipient of the Edward Yang New Talent Award at the Asian Film Awards.

Ishii gained international attention with SAWAKO DECIDES (2010), THE GREAT PASSAGE (2013), which won Picture of the Year at the Japan Academy Film Prize, and THE TOKYO NIGHT SKY IS ALWAYS THE DENSEST SHADE OF BLUE (2017), which topped Kinema Junpo’s Best Ten list. In 2014, he directed THE VANCOUVER ASAHI, which won an Audience Award at the 33th Vancouver International Film Festival. More recent films including MASKED HEARTS (2023), THE MOON (2023) and THE REAL YOU (2024), are provocative explorations of loneliness, dignity, technology, and the fragile bonds holding contemporary Japanese society together.
