Arnold Arai was born on April 14, 1928 in Vancouver, British Columbia. The interview is about Arnold Arai and his family’s life in Collingwood, Vancouver (prior to World War II), Powell Street, Tashme, Okanagan, and Hope, BC. He discusses living and working conditions in Tashme and recounts social and sport activities in Tashme. School education was taught by the United Church where he married. He was labelled ‘enemy alien’ during internment period, which affected his relationship with his peers. After the end of the war, there were a lot of discussions in the community about repatriating to Japan. Arnold went on to pursue his medical education, internship at St. Michael’s Hospital, and eventually employment in the medical field.
Taketo Murata was born on September 21, 1937, in Vancouver, British Columbia. This interview is about Taketo Murata and his family’s life in Vancouver, BC (prior to the Second World War); Montreal, Quebec; and Toronto, Ontario. He discusses his family’s life and small business in Vancouver before the war and what he remembers of Minto City during the war. He describes growing up and going to school on the South Shore of Montreal as an Anglophone Japanese Canadian. He became successful in higher education and went on to have a career in upper management in marketing at a packaged foods company.
