Haru Matsuri (Spring Festival)

Get ready for spring as we hold our annual Haru Matsuri on Saturday March 3 and Sunday March 4 from 12:00pm to 5:00pm (both days).

This year’s theme is Cranes. Shortly after we held our Spring Festival last year, the Tohoku region in Japan experienced the devastating earthquake and tsunami. The JCCC Foundation responded by forming the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund. Along with this fundraising, we also created an initiative in conjunction with the GTA school boards. Many volunteers went out to schools to raise awareness by teaching children to fold origami cranes and create Senbazuru (1000 crane mobiles for good luck). The students also wrote letters of support and encouragement to their counterparts in the affected regions. With the upcoming anniversary, we felt this theme was an opportunity to renew our commitment and encouragement for recovery in the region and to recognize the progress that has been made in such a short period of time.

Tohoku Region: Rebuilding for a Better Tomorrow

Photo Exhibit Commemorates One Year of Tragedy, Friendship and Recovery Efforts

A photo exhibit showing both the devastation resulting from the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011 and the subsequent recovery efforts, which has been remarkable in its speed and efficiency, will be on display at Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre from March 1 to 13.

Also on display is theKizuna art project, which features both pictures sent to Japan from children around the world as expressions of support; and those drawn by young students in the affected areas .

The Great East Japan Earthquake, which hit on March 11, 2011, was a disaster of unprecedented scale for Japan.  Casualties include over 15,700 dead, 4500 missing and 5700 injured.  Economic damage to the region by the earthquake has been estimated at 16.9 trillion yen.

Since then, however, Japan has made tremendous progress on the road to recovery, thanks in great part to the outpouring of sympathy and generosity from the international community.  This exhibit is a reflection of the resilience of the Japanese people, as well as the kind support of Japan’s friends abroad.  It also is an expression of Japan’s sincere gratitude.
