Makoto Shinkai’s (Your Name, Weathering with You) masterpiece tells the story of two people, Takaki and Akari, who were close friends but gradually grow farther and farther apart as time moves on. They become separated because of their families yet continue to exchange contact in the form of letters. Yet as time continues to trudge on, their contact with one another begins to cease. Years pass and the rift between them grows ever larger. However, Takaki remembers the times they have shared together, but as life continues to unfold for him, he wonders if he would be given the chance to meet Akari again as the tale embarks on Takaki's realization of the world and people around him.

The film is presented as an anthology of three interconnected short stories: “Oukasho” (Cherry Blossom), “Cosmonaut,” and “5 Centimeters per Second,” all three orbit the life of the protagonist. A powerful and emotionally devastating tour-de-force with Shinkai’s spectacular visuals front and center.

After the death of their estranged father, three sisters, Sachi, Yoshino, and Chika, meet their teenage half-sister Suzu at his funeral and impulsively invite her to live with them. As the seasons pass, the four sisters share everyday joys, sorrows, and small moments of change, gradually forming a deeper bond. With warmth and grace, the film reflects on family, forgiveness, and the enduring strength of sisterhood. One of director Hirokazu Koreeda’s most beloved masterpieces.

KOKUHO (国宝) is a 2025 Japanese drama film directed by Lee Sang-il and written by Satoko Okudera, based on the novel of the same name by Shuichi Yoshida. The film stars Ryo Yoshizawa, Ryusei Yokohama, Mitsuki Takahata, Shinobu Terajima, Min Tanaka, and Ken Watanabe.

The story follows Kikuo Tachibana, the son of a yakuza boss who is murdered by a rival gang. At fifteen, Kikuo is taken in as an apprentice by kabuki actor Hanai Hanjiro. Although kabuki tradition prizes family lineage, Kikuo’s extraordinary natural talent propels him to fame and artistic success.

The film had its world premiere in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival on May 18, followed by a North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2025. It was released theatrically in Japan by Toho on June 6, becoming both a critical and commercial success, and was selected as Japan’s official submission for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards. KOKUHO has become a cultural phenomenon in Japan with audiences returning for multiple viewings. It is now the second highest grossing live-action film in Japanese cinema history.
