JCCC Nostalgia Night Honours Judo

On Saturday, July 30th, the JCCC’s Nostalgia Night honoured the four original martial arts (Judo, Aikido, Karate and Kendo). In the photo are K. C. Tsumura (karate) Osamu Obata (aikido) Brian Asa (kendo) and Russ Takashima (judo) receive their Pioneer Award from the JCCC Heritage Committee.

This summer we visited the Kodokan in Tokyo, Japan.
	This summer we visited the Kodokan in Tokyo, Japan. First we visited the museum on the second floor. There was a collection of old books showing judo throws and some photographs, including a black and white photograph of a Toronto judo class from 1957. There was also a gi that had been used by Sensei Kano, though it was in pretty ragged condition. Then we went to look at the dojo. We went up to the eighth floor and entered a balcony with chairs that overlooked the area. The dojo was over four times the size of our dojo. There was a table and chair on one side under a picture of Sensei Kano.
When we arrived, two black belts were practicing an advanced kata under the supervision of a senior sensei. Then we watched a kids class. Those kids arriving late ran over to the senior sensei to bow to him, then headed over to the picture of Sensei Kano to bow. We thought that our warm-up exercises were harder than theirs, though they did do some of the same exercises that we do. Then we went to the souvenir shop ... Lastly, we had our picture taken in from of the statue of Sensei Kano that is in front of the Kodokan. Liam & Barrett

Nisei Veteran’s Award

On Sunday, July 19th at the JCCC’s Arigato Day, the winners for the Nisei Veteran’s Awards were announced. This year Roman Spada was the winner in the martial arts category. Roman joins previous winners from our club, Shujon Mazumder and Michael Gan on the Nisei Veteran’s Award plaque located next to the Bulletin Board.

Roman receives his award along with Jennifer Michiko Dan (odori dance group recipient). The award was presented by Nisei veterans Fred Kagawa and George Shintani.
