What is Judo?

Judo, which is translated as “the gentle way”, teaches the principle of flexibility in the application of technique. This is the flexible or efficient use of balance, leverage and the movement of Judo throws and other skills. Skill, technique and timing, rather than brute strength are the essential ingredients for success in Judo.

Judo is best known for its spectacular throwing techniques but also involves considerable grappling on the ground utilizing specialized control holds, arm locks and judo choking techniques. 

How old do you have to be to start judo?

We accept students from the age of 6 and up. Our program is designed to accept beginners who are children or adults. No previous judo experience is required.  

How is judo different from karate?

Judo is comprised of throws and grappling techniques, while karate is comprised primarily of punches and kicks. Also there is only one “school” or “style” of judo in the world, Kodokan Judo. Where as there are many different schools of karate. 

What makes judo a good sport?

Judo can be done by anyone, male or female, at any age. Judo can be taken as a recreational activity that is enjoyed by the whole family. There is a competitions aspect that can be pursued to the international and Olympic levels. Judo can improve balance, coordination, reflexes and flexibility as well as physical strength and endurance. It also can improve one’s self-confidence, concentration, and self-discipline. Most of all, Judo teaches respect for oneself and for others.
